Repurposing, upcycling, and living more with less

They say it takes a village to raise a child. In many ways, it took a village to build our skoolie. Between online forums, YouTube videos, friends with crowbars, parents with property, friends with a big driveway, and friends who design, we may have done most of the physical work ourselves but we were never alone. And we are grateful for that.

It's safe to say that bus living has changed our lives. We are more conscious of how we shop, what we buy, and having less stuff has certainly made us more free. It's definitely counter to the American consumer stereotype of 'bigger is better'. Sometimes more is more and sometimes less is more and when it comes to our skoolie life, less is definitely more.

It's been no secret on our blog that we appreciate our friends who own Funcycled, an upcycling, repurposing, custom furniture, and interior design business. (The bus would have had a bright red refrigerator if it wasn't for Sarah. I love red but it wouldn't have been the right choice.) They were celebrating Earth Day with a Repurposing/Upcycling competition, so we decided to throw the bus' hat in the ring. We knew it wasn't the traditional repurposing of furniture, but it shows on a grander scale that things are not always what you imagine them to be. You can live small and have a huge life. We have had dinner guests. We have given tours. We have designed and redesigned and fixed and changed but it's always with the end goal of 'How do we make the most out of the one life we have been given?' Click here to read the article about the Funcycled competition. And if you're in the market for furniture or something custom that is too big to fit on the bus, be sure to check them out at funcycled.com. You'll be glad you did.
